Less than a mile from the heart of downtown Atlanta, a hidden treasure, a secret sanctuary, welcomes you. This garden cemetery, founded in 1850, is the final resting place of many of Atlanta's settlers, builders, and most noted citizens like Bobby Jones, Margaret Mitchell, and Maynard Jackson. It is also a showplace of sculpture and architecture, and a botanical preserve with ancient oaks and magnolias. Here in this peaceful place the full scope of the city's rich and fascinating history unfolds before you. Important Atlanta milestones are represented, from early builders, to Civil War soldiers, to leaders of industry, to Civil Rights pioneers. Oakland is also poetry, art, architecture, nature, and personal stories of 70,000 souls. Residents of Oakland are the celebrated and humble whom rest together at Oakland. Sunday in the Park

October 7th 2012 from 12-6

The 33rd annual Sunday in the Park Victorian Street Festival.  Bring the whole family for this event!  There will be live music and food.  Don’t miss the story tellers, horse and carriage rides, Teddy Bear tea, and much, much more! Don’t forget to prepare your costume for our Victorian Costume Contest. 

Run Like Hell or Heck 5k

Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012 at 9 a.m.

Runners of all ages can Run Like Hell (or like Heck for the kids) through hauntingly beautiful Oakland Cemetery and neighboring Grant Park Saturday, October 20.

This year the course will wind past even more of the magnificent monuments and stately mausoleums of Atlanta’s oldest burial site where such notables as Margaret Mitchell, Bobby Jones and Maynard Jackson are buried.  Unique “cemetery themed” awards will be presented in multiple categories. Costumes are encouraged! Plan on participating in the Annual Costume Contest following the races where more awards will be given!

Halloween Tour

Historic Oakland Cemetery receives many visitors each day, but only at Halloween do the gates stay open after dark. Witness the magnificent final resting place of Atlanta's sons and daughters during "Capturing the Spirit of Oakland" 2012 Halloween Tours. Join in this year and hear first-hand accounts about our city's past, narrated by a host of Oakland's eternal "residents." You'll also see gorgeous candlelit mausoleums in this one-of-a-kind annual tradition. Bring a flashlight and wear comfortable walking shoes. Enjoy refreshments for sale and browse Oakland's Museum Shop for unique finds.
